Each referral surgery begins with a comprehensive consultation with the referring veterinarian to discuss the diagnosis, procedure and prognosis associated with the patient. Additionally, a thorough explanation is given to the client prior to the surgery.
Upon request, referral surgeries may be videotaped with surgeon's comments throughout for the referring veterinarian's reference. Clients are welcome to watch their pet's surgical procedure on a closed circuit television monitor.
Following pre-anesthetic blood work, each patient is thoroughly prepared for surgery with clipping, shaving and sterilization. We pledge strict adherence to the highest standards of surgical protocol in every case.
Every patient's ECG, blood oxygen level, carbon dioxide level, respiration and heart sounds, temperature, pulse and heart rate are closely monitored. A trained circulating OR nurse constantly reports all these readings to the surgeon throughout the procedure, assuring that the patient's surgery and anesthesia will be as safe as possible. Every effort is made to maintain complete instrumentation required for your referral.
During the postoperative recovery period, the surgeon and certified technicians keep a vigilant watch on the patient's recovery. Depending on the intensity of critical care patients, 24 hour monitoring is also available when necessary.
We encourage our clients to visit their pets during the postoperative recovery period.
A complete, computerized medical record is maintained on each case. Following an initial post-op phone report to the referring veterinarian, detailed referral reports and surgical records are promptly dictated, printed and mailed for your medical records. In some cases, this may include a DVD of the surgery. CD’s of digital radiographs can be either emailed or sent directly to referring veterinarians and their clients.
